Gold chains are a timeless accessory that adds elegance and style to any outfit. They can be worn anywhere, for any occasion. However, prolonged wearing of the chains can lead to dirt buildup and discolouration, resulting in the loss of lustre and shine over time. This is why there is a need to clean the jewellery.
But going to a jeweller for a regular cleanup may not seem practical. Unsure of your capability to clean it yourself? Fear not! Revitalising your gold jewellery, particularly those cherished chains, is not as daunting a task as it may seem. With just a few simple steps, you can easily bring back their original gleam and radiance within the comfort of your own home.
In this blog, we will provide you with comprehensive guidance on effective methods to clean your precious jewellery at home.
Tips to Clean Your Gold Chain at Home
The gold chains are easy to clean. There are several ways to clean them easily at home using common kitchen supplies. Some of the easy methods you could follow are:
1. Use Warm Water
Rinsing your jewellery in warm water can help with discolouration and build-up removal from them. Follow these steps to clean your gold chain with warm water:
- Firstly, you need to take a bowl and fill it with warm water.
- Add 2 - 3 drops of dishwashing soap or detergent to it, and mix well.
- Place the chain in the bowl for 5 minutes, and rub it gently with your fingers. You can also use a toothbrush for better cleaning.
- Take out the chain and dry it with a soft cotton cloth.
2. Using Toothpaste
Cleaning gold chains at home has proven to be a good method of washing off any kind of dirt from your chain.
- First, mix your regular toothpaste with water to make it a paste-like consistency.
- Grab a toothbrush and start scrubbing your chain using the paste you made.
- Scrub your jewellery gently, using the mixture.
- Wash it after 7 - 10 minutes of scrubbing and dry it using a clean, soft cloth.

3. Using Baking Soda & Vinegar
Baking soda is known to have a very immediate effect on rubbing off dirt from literally any material, including the gold chain. But before using baking soda to clean your jewellery, keep in mind that you should never use baking soda or vinegar on gold pieces that have stones or pearls as embellishments. The reason behind this is that generally, vinegar destroys the enamel coating of gemstones or embellishments, which results in the loss of gleam and sparkle in the jewellery.
- The first step is to take a half cup of water, mix it with three parts baking soda, and make a thick paste
- Take a cotton swab or a soft cloth to apply the paste to your chain.
- Once the chain is covered with the mixture, place it in a bowl and gently pour white vinegar over it.
- Soak it for 5 minutes, wash your gold chain with water and dry it with a clean cloth.
4. Using Alcohol
Used for testing the purity of the gold, any original gold jewellery would not be damaged by using alcohol. Before cleaning your chains with alcohol, make sure that they have no stone or gem embellishments.
To clean your gold chains with alcohol, follow the steps below:
- Take a bowl and place your chain in it. Now, pour 91% isopropyl alcohol into it.
- Gently clean the chain for 3 - 5 minutes using a cotton swab.
- Dip the chain in the alcohol overnight. Next morning, take it out and clean it with a lint-free cloth.
5. Using Soap
Soaps can be used to clean the gold chains; however, they won’t be very effective for heavy oxidation. Make sure that the soap you use is gentle so that it does not harm the jewellery’s shine and finish.
- Take a bowl and fill it with lukewarm water.
- Add a mild soap and mix well to make a paste. Dip your gold chain in that mixture for 5 minutes.
- Wash your chain with freshwater till the soap is washed off.
- Pat dry your chain with a lint-free cloth.
6. Boiling the Chain
Just like how warm water cleans your gold jewellery, boiling water is also an effective way to clean it.
- Bring water to a boil and then pour this water over the jewellery.
- Keep it for a while and dry it with a cloth.
- Ensure that your chain doesn’t touch the bottom of the pot, as exposure to hot metals may end up damaging the jewellery.
7. Using Peroxide Solution
Similar to the alcohol solution, you can also use the peroxide solution if you have it at home.
- Soak your jewellery for a short while in the peroxide solution.
- Add a pinch of baking soda to the solution for deep cleaning.
- You can also use this method to clean imitation jewellery
8. Using Ammonia
Ammonia can be used to clean gold chains, however, regular usage of ammonia can lead to the breaking down of the jewellery.
- Make a mixture of 6 parts of warm tap water with 1 part ammonia.
- Soak your chain in this mixture for a minute maximum.
- Rinse the chain thoroughly with fresh water, and dry it.
9. Using Cleaning Solution
If you are not sure about using the above tips, you can opt for a commercial cleaner. There are a myriad of options available in the market that can give you the desired result. While making the purchase, make sure to check the label to verify that it is okay to use on gold chains.
Tips to Maintain the Shine and Lustre of the Gold Chains
Taking proper care of your gold jewellery can preserve its shine for many years. There are a few things that you can do daily to make your gold chains look new:

- Take off your gold chain before showering, swimming, or any activities involving water or chemicals.
- Store your chains in the jewellery box while you’re not wearing them.
- Use a cloth to clean your jewellery every few weeks to remove any dirt and oil accumulated on the chain.
- Avoid exposing your jewellery to ammonia, bleach, or other harsh chemicals.
With all the methods mentioned above, you can clean your chains. However, it is to be noted that household methods cannot replicate the work done by professionals. Thus, if you still find your gold chain dull despite trying the above methods, bring it to your jeweller. Most of them will clean your jewellery for free.

One thing to keep in mind is the proper storage of the jewellery. Store it in a fabric-lined box or pouch to avoid any damage. Also, make sure to keep them in a dark, cool and dry place, away from the sunlight. The care you take for your jewellery should depend on the type of chain you have. Remember to handle your jewellery with care and use gentle cleaning methods to preserve its quality and value. With the right approach, you can keep your gold chain looking as shiny as the first day.
