10 Easy Ways to Know if Your Gold Jewellery Is Real

Thu Mar 07 2024

One of the most precious metals in the world, gold is highly admired for its value. More than just a resource; it is an investment and a source of financial security. Due to its high value and preciousness, it is important to ensure that your gold is original and not merely a substitute.

But do you know how to ensure the authenticity of your gold? There are several ways to know if your gold is real or not. In this blog, we will discuss some methods that help you determine the genuineness of your gold.

What Are the Methods to Check if Your Gold Jewellery Is Real?

You may naturally run into the question, "Can I test the purity of the gold at home?" The answer is yes! Determining the purity of your gold is possible through several methods. Here are some simple ways to see if your gold is real.

1. Check Hallmarks on Jewellery

Looking for hallmarks is one of the most common and easiest methods to ascertain if your gold is real. Hallmarks are usually placed in not-so-easily noticeable places in jewellery. Therefore, magnifying glasses are needed to see hallmarks clearly, which is why this method is also called the magnifying glass test.

Karat and millesimal fineness are used in purity scale tests. Under the Karat system, the valid purity numbers include 8k, 10k, 14k, 18k, 22k, 24k, etc. The purity of gold increases with a higher karat value. If the value shows 24k, it means the gold is 99.9% pure. In millesimal fineness, the valid purity numbers are 333, 375, 417, 500, 583, or 585, 625, 750, 833, 875, 899, 916, 958, 999, etc.

Though it is the standard method to test the purity of gold, the hallmark testing method is not completely reliable.

2. Check Letter Markings on Jewellery

Letter markings are an alternative method to assess the purity of gold. Some of the common letter markings include:

  • GP (Gold Plated)

  • GF (Gold Filled)

  • GE (Gold Electroplated)

  • RGP (Rolled Gold Plate)

  • HGP (Heavy Gold Plated)

  • HEG (Heavy Gold Electroplated)

If you find these labels in the material, it means that the gold jewellery is not completely made of gold but is gold-plated.

3. Water Test

This is one of the easiest methods to check if the gold is real at home. This test is conducted based on the density of the gold.

Fill a container with water and drop the gold material to be tested into it. If the gold sinks into the water, it can be considered real gold. However, if the material floats in water, it is fake.

4. Magnet Test

The magnet test is also one of the easiest methods to check if the gold is real. To conduct the test, take a strong magnet and bring it to the material to be tested. Gold is non-magnetic. Therefore, if the material gets attracted to the magnet, it is not real gold. But if it does not get attracted to the magnet, the gold is real.

5. Skin Test

To conduct the skin test, take a piece of gold and hold it in your hands for a few minutes. Rub the gold against your hands and look for any reactions. If the material reacts and changes the colour of the hands, you can conclude that the gold is not genuine. If it shows no effect on your hands, that means the gold is real.

6. Make-up Test

Apply foundation to your hand and rub the gold against it. Observe if there is any colour change on your hand. After rubbing, if it leaves a black colour on your hand, then it is not real gold.

7. Vinegar Test

It is possible to determine the purity of the gold using the vinegar test. Put a few drops of vinegar on the material to be tested. If it changes colour, it indicates that the gold is fake. If you witness no colour change, the jewellery can be considered to be made of gold.

8. Nitric Acid Test

Keep the jewellery to be tested on a stainless steel plate. Pour a few drops of nitric acid on it and observe the reaction. If there is no reaction or change in colour, the gold is authentic.

9. Ceramic Test

To conduct this test, take an unglazed ceramic tile and rub the jewellery against it. If the streak left behind is yellow, it means that the jewellery is genuine and is made of gold. However, if it leaves a black or brown line, it clearly indicates that the material is not made of gold.

10. Weight and Size Test

Take a piece of jewellery made of gold and take the item to be tested. If the gold to be tested seems lighter than its size, it is most likely to be fake.

Final Thoughts

Testing the purity of gold at home is possible using a variety of methods and readily available materials such as water, magnets, vinegar, etc. However, it is always better to keep in mind that none of these methods can be completely relied upon. Professional methods are always the best, and an experienced jeweller can provide you with the most accurate results.
